November 29, 2000

(Office of Her Majesty, Press Department – Amman) The proceeds of the National Campaign in Support of the Victims of the Intifada, initiated by His Majesty King Abdullah and patronized by Her Majesty Queen Rania, has come out to approximately 225, 000 Jordanian dinars.

Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah was briefed about the results of the Campaign on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Khalid Toukan, Director General of the Jordan River Foundation, Ms. Malak El Nasser, and Chairperson of the Coordinating Committee of the National Societies headed by Her Majesty Queen Rania, Mrs. Haifa Bashir, the three main organizing bodies of the National Campaign.

The Queen thanked the organizers for their tireless efforts, and said that the proceeds should also reach victims of the Intifada who have not received assistance, adding that similar initiatives to the National Campaign must take place in the future so as to continue to lend a helping hand to the Palestinians.

Speaking during the meeting held at the Jordan River Foundation, Dr. Toukan noted that over JD 180,000 came from the schools themselves, while Secretary General of the Minister of Education, Mr. Ghazi Khreisha said that the Campaign was a comprehensive community based effort bringing together the active participation of students from across the country, teachers, and parents.

The National Campaign in Support of the Families of the Victims of the Aqsa Intifada aims to provide financial and moral support to the families of the victims of the Intifada. The Campaign began at schools across the Kingdom last month, in an expression of support by Jordanian school children for their Palestinian counterparts in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Over 1000 students joined the Queen on October 30 at the Al Quds School for Girls in Jabal Al Nuzha, to launch the campaign. In addition to the students, teachers, parents, and national societies from across the Kingdom's governorates financially supported the Campaign.

Alongside the school initiative, the Campaign organizers also hosted a Fundraising event and are planning a visit by a delegation to the West Bank and Gaza Strip to deliver the finances and goods to the Palestinian families of the victims, and to assess their further needs.
