November 08, 2010

(Office of Her Majesty, Press Department- New York) - Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah was honored today as one of Glamour’s Women of the year, at a ceremony in Carnegie Hall in New York. The magazine publishes the Women of the year list annually. This year the list includes actress Julia Roberts, entertainers Fergie and Cher, female world leaders, Olympic gold medalists Mia Hamm and Lisa Leslie and a host of other women.

Glamour’s Women of the Year advisory board, made up of past honorees ranging from Jennifer Lopez to Nora Ephron to Katie Couric, helped nominate this year’s honorees

Accepting the award, Her Majesty thanked the magazine for the honor and said: “glamour is not about how good women can look” adding that it is “about how much good women can do. It is about courage, strength, determination. It’s about selflessness. And I see a lot of that glamour here tonight!”

An avid campaigner for girls’ education the Queen dedicated the award to girls worldwide adding that: “Access to quality education can lighten that load and lift up lives, one girl at a time. And when you lift up one girl, she passes that gift of strength on. She lifts up another and another and another, until they all they stand tall and proud”

A star-studded list of presenters gave out the awards at the ceremony which also included a special musical performance by Janelle Monáe.

In a statement by Glamour Magazine, the organizers said that: Glamour’s Women of the Year event has had an impact on politics and society that literally saves lives. Glamour continues its Women of the Year Fund initiative, which translates the message of the event into action. The magazine’s 12 million readers can contribute to charities supported by the Women of the Year Fund at glamour.com/woty and watch their contributions make a difference in the pages of Glamour, which will follow the progress of the recipients.
