Queen Rania Inaugurates New Family Protection Directorate Center in Jabal Al Nasr

(Office of Her Majesty, Press Department- Amman) - Her Majesty Queen Rania said today: “Family cases cannot be solved by security forces only, but need all encompassing solutions,” and stressed the importance of a cooperative approach for dealing with abuse and family violence cases.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Family Protection Directorate’s newest center in Jabal Al Naser in East Amman, Her Majesty advocated the need to establish special departments in all ministries that deal with such issues, to follow up on these cases, especially the ones that need immediate intervention. As well as increasing cooperation amongst the different departments to establish roles and responsibilities of each to ensure high levels of accountability.

The inaugural visit by Her Majesty comes on the occasion of the national day for child safety. As part of the visit, Her Majesty toured the center’s facilities including: the forensic clinic, social workers department as well as other units in the center that welcomes cases from all over East Amman. During a meeting with the FPD’s partners, Her Majesty watched a brief power point presentation highlighting the main role of the Directorate, presented by Brigadier Mohammad Zo’bi.

After the presentation, FPD partners briefed Her Majesty on their roles, achievements and challenges in the field of family protection. The FPD partners include General Director of the Public Security Directorate, Major General Hussein Al Majali; Head of the FPD, Brigadier Mohammad Zo’bi; Minister of Justice, H.E. Ayman Odeh; Minster of Social Affairs, H.E. Hala Lattouf; Minister of Health, H.E. Nayef Al Fayez Head of the National Council for Family Affairs (NCFA) Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh; Head of the Forensic Medicine Department, Dr. Mo’men Al Hadidi; and Head of the Jordan River Foundation (JRF), Valantina Qsaisyeh. The Meeting was also attended by Major Hisham Shamayleh (Head of the FPD – East Amman).

Since 2007, Her Majesty Queen Rania has been granting patronage to the Family Protection Directorates’ regional conference, and attended the conference in 2007. Upon Her Majesty’s directives in 2009 to ensure the coordination of all partners on a national level, the National Team for Family Protection was established. The team meets every month to discuss, monitor and improve services provided for families.

Each of the partners has a specific role in the endorsement of family protection as well as its development, and these Partners include The Ministry of Justice, The Ministry of Social Development, The Ministry of Health, NCFA and JRF, which is the only active community based organization, that is part of this team, and provides support through its Family Justice Model in the Queen Rania Center for Family and Children.

The FPD was established in 1997 by the Public Security Directorate, to deal with and investigate all crimes committed against women and children. As a follow-up to their main center in West Amman, in 2007, another unit was created in East Amman serving Marka, Jabal El Naser, Al Quesmeh and Sahab due to the high demand in the underprivileged areas in Jordan.

Currently, there are a total number of 10 centers around Jordan including: Amman (two centers), Aqaba, Karak, Madaba, Salt, Zarqa, Jarash, Mafraq, and Irbid.
