October 02, 2007

(Jordan Times - Amman) The Jordan River Foundation (JRF) held its annual Ramadan fundraiser event, whose proceeds will be used to support JRF’s different programmes and projects across the Kingdom.

The event, attended by Her Majesty Queen Rania, who chairs the foundation, was held to empower the JRF and to strengthen relations with its various sponsors, both individual and corporate.

In her welcoming address, JRF Director General Valentina Qussisiya briefed the guests on the foundation’s achievements, including its programmes and projects implemented in the Kingdom’s 12 governorates.

She said these programmes are carried out with the assistance of representatives of the local communities, to identify residents’ needs and priorities, she explained.

This year was one of achievements for the foundation, in terms of empowering local communities to play a key role in improving the standard of living in all governorates, Qussisiya added.

The JRF director general highlighted the foundation’s Qudorat Programme, which seeks to strengthen the institutional capacities of over 65 nongovernmental community-based organisations (CBOs), and enable them to manage and carry out socio-economic programmes efficiently and effectively.

The CBOs are in Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash, Balqa, Maan and Aqaba, she said.

In line with the government’s plan to combat poverty and provide job opportunities, Qudorat is targeting impoverished areas to improve their inhabitants’ living conditions and provide job opportunities in various sectors.

Qussisiya highlighted the foundation’s development programmes carried out in poverty pockets as well as its role in promoting projects for the young through which they can contribute to building their community.

The JRF’s main sponsors include Zain, Petra Travel and Tourism Company, and Royal Jordanian.

Established in 1995, the JRF, is a nonprofit nongovernmental organisation, which works to empower society, especially women and children, and in turn, improve the quality of life to secure a better future for all citizens.
