Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania in Morocco

January 14, 2008

(Jordan Times - Marrakesh) Her Majesty Queen Rania and Morocco’s First Lady Lalla Salma on Monday jointly inaugurated a newly built extension of the “Dar El Bir wa Lihsane” charity centre in Marrakesh.

During a tour of the facility, Queen Rania and Lalla Salma, accompanied by Lalla Meryem, were briefed on the activities of the centre, which offers children and young people, especially girls, the chance to receive training in different crafts, so they can integrate at a later stage with members of their local community.

Established in 1983, the centre has provided services to around 700 elderly residents, who receive basic services, including food, clothing and healthcare.

The new expansion will cater to children and young girls who need social care, especially those who have been denied the chance to complete their formal education for some reason.

As part of the centre’s activities, specialists train the young people in different crafts to provide them with the chance for a decent life.

In the sections designated for theoretical studies related to different crafts, Queen Rania was briefed on the centre’s mission and objectives.

She toured the carpentry and blacksmith workshops where around 80 young men and girls currently receive training, with the number expected to rise to 250.
