Queen Rania's Commencement Speech at the International Academy Amman Graduation 2014

Thank you, Dr. Hana, for your warm words. And, let me start by congratulating you! Both on your appointment as President of the Middle East IB Association… and on your selection as a board member of the prestigious Council of International Schools. IAA is lucky to have you at the helm.

Your Majesty… IAA families... distinguished guests… and, the reason we’re all here today: CLASS OF 2014! Congratulations to each and every one of you! Alf Mabrouk!

You know, this is the fourth IAA graduation and one thing’s for sure: no one can accuse IAA of not being environmentally friendly – they’ve recycled this commencement speaker four years in a row!

This is also my fourth speech in less than a month. But it’s the most challenging. Why?

Because while you have your biggest fans in the audience: your families, friends, and teachers… I have my toughest critics. My children!

Your Majesty, as always, I’m counting on your support!

Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking about what I would say to you today. But my mind kept returning to another date: the 27th of September 1996 – the day my daughter, Iman, was born. That day…and the countless moments since…when the shutters of my mind clicked and captured precious memories.

Those countless times Sayidna and I have looked at you and whispered, “Why can’t she stay like this forever?”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been rummaging through the treasure box of memories. Your parents, too, have been taking them out, one by one. The slightly faded…the still vivid – gently unfolding their frayed edges…and holding them up to the light. Smiling. Remembering.

And we’ll be doing even more of that after summer when you leave for college. When the house is quiet. And absurdly tidy. We’ll be missing you.

In a way, though, we’ve been missing you … your whole life.

On your first birthday, we miss the newborn…and how your tiny pink fingers curled so sweetly, so instinctively, around our own.

At two, we miss the one year old…and that inexplicable smile which flickers on your lips as you sleep.

At five, we miss the cheeky three year old stumbling over new words and sentences.

And all too soon, we’ll be thinking back on today. And how all of you are so poised …so grown-up…so ready for the next adventure.

All of this makes this year’s speech more difficult for me – so I’ll be brief. Not for lack of things to say…but because I don’t think the words I need exist. For what language can hope to express a heart so full of love… sadness… fear… excitement…and nostalgia? Perhaps that’s why we parents are at once laughing and crying in moments like these.

But, I’ll also be brief because, really, I belong there. I am, before anything else, mom to one of the 18 beautiful princesses here today.

Don’t worry guys; you’re looking quite dashing too!

But you’ve got more than your good looks going for you. As a parent and a patron, I get double bragging rights.

You’re behind the biggest and best MUN yet. You lobbied and secured an IB lounge. By the way, the 11th graders say ‘thanks!’ You’ve taken the school’s name to new heights – all the way up Mount Kilimanjaro. And it clearly inspired you. Because you took the high-school furniture to new heights as well. And, moms and dads, that’s no metaphor.

That moment of inspired mischief sums you guys up. Some might have thought that the-furniture-on-the-roof project was impossible. They might have given up. Not you guys. You set goals… and achieve them.

Class of 2014, we’re so proud of you! We can’t wait to see what’s next.

And while your story may start with your mothers and fathers …and your IAA family, the chapters of your life here-on-in are your own to write and edit.

Now, I’m no author but I’m well into the chapters of my story. So, allow me to share some writing tips that I’ve learned along the way.

First; don’t be bashful. Use big, bold fonts in all that you do. They get you noticed. Your big ideas deserve nothing less.

Next; feel free to scribble wildly outside the margins of the page. Don’t confine yourself to other people’s borders. You may think the opposite of courage is cowardice. It’s not…it’s conformity.

And, don’t worry about crossing things out. You’ll make mistakes. Don’t erase them. Work with them. Work around them. Trust me, they’re part of the plot -- and it’s richer for them.

Remember to have fun writing! Pull out those crayons and color all over … with love and laughter … with friends and family. You only have one shot at life, so don’t live it in black and white. Revel in the grey areas and the techni-colour zones.

Last, but by no means least, be sure to acknowledge all your contributing editors – your parents, families, teachers, and administrators. Let’s give them all a big ‘thank you’ now.

Class of 2014, you’ve all got a blockbuster and best-seller in you. And we can’t wait to read it. Because we love you…and we’re your number one fans!
