In the five years since its launch, Twitter has become a social networking phenomenon. More than 140 million tweets are published a day, drawing in celebrities, politicians and royalty.

Today, Twitter’s 140-character updates are used for everything from sharing the latest celebrity gossip, to sparking social revolutions.

In the ‘Arab Spring’ revolutions, Twitter was at the fore. In Tunisia, protestors used it to organise mass rallies that aided in the overthrow of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. In Egypt, when authorities tried to impose an internet blackout, local activists took to Twitter to keep communications running.

From royal musings to social commentary, Twitter is a force to be reckoned with in the Arab world. But who are the biggest players in the Twitterverse? Arabian Business has pulled together the top 10 most popular Arabs on Twitter, alongside a list of the world’s most popular accounts. Think that we’ve missed someone? Then tell us below.
